Laboratory Manager, Night Shift As the Laboratory Manager you will serve as the technical leader in the Plant laboratory and will develop, maintain and implement proper procedures for the lab. This position will provide leadership and training to lab team members, ensure proper communication from the lab to other departments, and maintain high quality and safety standards.
Essential Functions & Requirements:
- Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times
- Demonstrates leadership to laboratory team members to ensure the objectives of the lab and Company are achieved
- Provides oversight of operational and functional needs of the Fuel Laboratory
- Develops and implements the lab budget; purchases and ensures the maintenance of lab instrumentation
- Works in accordance with all stated policies and procedures and reinforces these with lab personnel
- Stays informed of, and completes practices in alignment with, safety procedures, waste analysis, and quality assurance plans; maintains responsibility for daily assessments and any corrective actions required
- Analyzes materials to proficiently determine characteristics and waste profiles under the position's scope
- Conducts testing including, but not limited to the following:
- Determination of acidity and alkalinity, pH, oxidizer screening, peroxides, cyanides and sulfides, paint filter liquids, fuel and water compatibilities, solids percentage, heat of combustion (BTU value), total halogens, water analysis by Karl Fischer method, viscosity, density, and flashpoint
- Reactive sulfides, acid treatment for PCB screening, PCB identification & quantification, GC-ECD operations, metals digestion, metals by ICP, Hg analysis, and TOC
- Operation of Leeman ICPs Prodigy & Profile, Hg by AA, COD and BOD
- Monitors performance and requirements of approved methods to accomplish project and quality assurance / quality control objectives; provides timely and accurate recommendations regarding the training of lab personnel, equipment or procedure modifications and quality functions
- Maintains accurate quality control records and prepares reports using accurate data to the Plant Manager
- Maintains accurate laboratory training system in cooperation with EHS and L&D functions; coordinates training and development to provide continuous learning / advancement of laboratory personnel
- Maintains responsibility for the overall quality performance of the laboratory, including but not limited to production quotas, quality issues including audits, and laboratory appearance including client and internal tours
- Communicates with production, profile and sales personnel regarding relevant functional topics as necessary
- Maintains responsibility for overall performance of the lab shift including but not limited to production quotas, budget requirements, continuous position coverage and internal team and client collaboration
- Takes on additional duties as assigned to support the team and organization
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field (required)
Experience:
- 3+ years of laboratory experience utilizing testing methods and equipment (required)
- Previous laboratory management experience (required)
- Previous experience in the hazardous waste, environmental, or a related industry (preferred)
Competencies:
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency in all areas of the laboratory
- Basic computer knowledge and skills, including Microsoft Suite programs
- Ability to appropriately manage time and multiple priorities
- Working knowledge of one or more areas of analytical chemistry (preferably PCBs, volatiles and metals)
- Chemical knowledge including an understanding of characteristics, reactions, and hazards of substances encountered in the hazardous waste industry (and specifically the typical Plant waste stream)
- Ability to communicate in a timely manner to share specific information of questionable or hazardous material to the proper parties, to respond to incidents and train and inform others who may be exposed
- Working knowledge of instrument troubleshooting and maintenance relating to all analyses performed by the laboratory
- Ability to effectively communicate with peers, supervisors and other leaders or functions within the organization
- Regular and predictable attendance to perform the functions and requirements of this role
