Director of Tax


Primary Purpose: The Director of Tax for Heritage oversees the Tax function to provide proper management and control over direct and indirect tax functions including compliance activities, tax planning and tax risks. The Director of Tax works with various tax authorities and service providers to advise on existing tax impacts and recommends and implements tax strategies to minimize cash tax burden and prepare for future company growth. Additionally, the Director of Tax collaborates with Accounting leadership as the team works together, aligned with the company vision and strategy, to provide accurate and timely financial information to company management. This person should have an extensive background working in a matrix organization across multiple business units and functions including sales, operations, supply chain, marketing, IT, and accounting. This role is highly visible and will require an individual who can not only lead the charge, but to also complete the work, drive initiatives, and mentor and develop staff.

Essential Functions and Requirements:

  • Ensure Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and performing in a safe manner at all times.
  • Oversee the tax function and the reporting and payment of all local, state, and federal taxes, including tax estimates and extensions. Review tax returns and accruals. Deliver the required tax accounting needs, including the annual tax provision.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of tax software and 3rd party vendor and advising relationships to support our growth and tax strategies. Facilitate communication with appropriate government agencies and counsel related to tax matters.
  • Recommend and execute process improvements and productivity initiatives in the tax department. Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to tax functions through personal efforts and leveraging existing team members through mentorship and training.
  • Coordinate and lead team members with government taxation audits and notices. Support team members as they navigate audit requests and other priorities.
  • Identify upcoming law changes and lead communication for the risk impact on cash flow. Recommend actions and provide guidance to leadership on tax matters and strategies.
  • Coordinate with other functions of the business on tax-related issues, assisting in reducing the tax footprint of property tax and sales tax. Support and assist Payroll with tax-related questions, planning, and payments/recording.
  • Participate in the leadership of various operational based accounting functions that the Accounting Team currently supports, such as (Cash Management, Credit and Collections, Billing, Cash Application, Procurement, Accounts Payable, Capital Acquisition) as well as support the ongoing development and utilization of financial planning and reporting tools (Oracle EPM, MS Power BI) across the organization to improve operational and financial transparency.
  • Serve as a leader for Operational Excellence / LEAN Six-Sigma initiatives and projects, partnering with HES' head of Business Excellence and Master Black Belt. Recommend and execute process improvements and productivity initiatives in tax operations and other accounting areas.
  • Work closely with location/functional leaders and other Directors of Accounting to improve and drive positive change in the working capital performance of the company.
  • Collaborating with business leaders, take ownership in the development and reporting of key metrics (KPIs) relating to tax and tax compliance. Incorporate these metrics into daily/weekly/monthly reports, dashboards, and business review meetings. Provide clarity by connecting operational metrics to financial performance to improve decision making and drive better business outcomes.
  • Assist in the development of management presentations, including monthly financial reviews, dashboard reviews, and any necessary BOD decks.
  • Provide financial/business support and expertise as needed for various M&A related activities, including structuring transactions, assessing tax implications, and evaluating tax consequences; lead and coordinate tax due diligence efforts for potential M&A activities, including identifying tax risks, opportunities, and potential impacts on the organization; collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze and strategize tax-efficient integration plans post-acquisition.
  • Most importantly, this role will serve as a mentor to employees within the department supporting their freedom to learn and grow.

Education: Four Year Degree in Finance or Accounting required. CPA required. MBA preferred.

Experience: Minimum 10 years of tax experience and continued professional development required. Minimum 5 years management experience required. Strong accounting knowledge required.

Knowledge and Abilities: Demonstrated analytical skills and techniques. Keen ability and affinity for influencing, building trust and credibility, and collaborating with cross-functional teams and leaders. Highly skilled in all advanced functionality in MS Excel is required; deep understanding of data architecture and experience with advanced planning & analytical tools (ex. Oracle EPM, MS Power BI) is a major plus. Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft Financials is a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.
