Primary Purpose

The purpose of the position is to provide assistance in the coordination and proper disposal of waste materials for Heritage customers. This position oversees various tasks, including collection, segregation, processing and supporting documentation of waste activity.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times.
  • Assist in the segregation of chemicals by Department of Transportation (DOT) hazard class; packing/unpacking compatible chemicals in appropriate containers and preparing for treatment or transportation; completing necessary paperwork per job.
  • Performs job in a safe manner, following all safety procedures.
  • Complete logs and other paperwork necessary for tracking and billing purposes.
  • Tests for compatibility of chemicals before consolidating for disposal; combines chemicals in drums or disposes of it directly in treatment tanks.
  • Receives shipments of waste materials by unloading drums containing smaller lab packs. Review of packing slips to verify amount and type of waste received.
  • Responsible for keeping operating areas, walls, pipes, and floor in a clean and safe condition.
  • Operate the fork truck, bobcat, with attachments and all other HES vehicles and perform inspections as needed.
  • Introductory knowledge of highly hazardous chemicals/wastes management/assessment, cylinder handling, hazardous waste generation, management practices, shipping and related procedures.
  • Position handles hazardous materials and will often require use of PPE: boots, gloves, suits, eye/ear protection and respirator.

Education: Four year college degree (science major preferred) or 6+ yrs. equivalent experience required.

Experience: Prior lab packing or environmental waste experience preferred.. 40 hour HAZWOPER training preferred but will be provided after hire, if needed.

Knowledge and Abilities: This is a safety sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function. Ability to understand RCRA, DOT, and OSHA regulations. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts in both verbal and written communication methods. Basic computer skills. Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Requires the ability to communicate with work groups and individuals on waste management procedures. Requires the ability to apply principles and exercise judgement. Ability to be able to lift up to 60 pounds. Ability to wear PPE including respirator. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.

A post offer drug screen will be required.
