Corporate Health and Safety Systems Leader

Primary Purpose:

Leads, develops, and supports the health and safety programs of the company. Oversees conformance with federal, state, and local occupational safety regulations and company policies. Leads in the achievement of improved safety performance in conjunction with company management. Leads the corporate industrial hygiene process, supporting sites in developing industrial hygiene plans and managing risk of chemical, environmental, radioactive and biological hazards. Develops and maintains strong ties with locational leadership and safety personnel regarding implementation of corporate safety programs. Provides technical leadership and guidance to all departments when required regarding health and safety questions / issues.

Essential Functions and Requirements:

  • Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times.
  • Working under the direction of the Vice President of Health & Safety, partner with the Heritage site safety personnel, Executive Safety Committee, and company leaders to identify and deploy solutions that reduce occupational exposures and drive positive improvements in critical metrics.
  • Leads Serious Injury and Fatality Prevention efforts, processes and audits around transportation incidents.
  • Create a culture of safe work through driver safety training, incident prevention, safety campaigns, and driver/manager accountability.
  • Utilize and maintain technological tools to monitor driver performance and safety. Use data gathered to coach employees towards desired behaviors.
  • Supports the design and implementation stages of cultural and behavioral safety review programs. Designs processes that help identify gaps, overlaps and replication opportunities to be communicated and fed into strategic plans.
  • Plans, directs and manages the safety programs/processes and policies as needed to meet corporate goals and objectives.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and safety best practices.
  • Provides onsite support for Heritage locations.
  • Audit locations to ensure conformance with health, safety, and environmental requirements and corporate policies.
  • Identify corrective and preventive action needs through audits, incident investigations, and observation / data trending.
  • Audit equipment to ensure all company vehicles are safe, reliable, and meet operational requirements.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, project teams, customers, regulators, contractors.
  • Leads or assist with the vehicle crash property damage claims/insurance process.
  • Represent the company with OSHA and other regulatory officials regarding inspections and investigations.
  • Travel up to 50%

Education: Four-year college degree required. Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering preferred. CSP preferred.

Experience: Minimum of Eight years' experience working in health and safety required. Strong abilities and experience with transportation/fleet safety required.

Knowledge and Abilities: This is a safety sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function. Thorough knowledge and understanding of all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety. Good organization skills. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirator. Strong supervision skills, with proven ability to lead others. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with internal and external customers and to effectively manage and motivate employees and communicate objectives and action plans. Ability to influence, sell, convince, collaborate. Strong project management skills. Strong decision-making skills. Ability to research facts, data and other information from internal and external sources. Strong grammar and writing skills. Basic knowledge of environmental business and/or chemical manufacturing. Strong use of computers and corresponding programs - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other data base programs. Ability to maintain confidential business information. Ability to establish positive relations with internal and external stakeholders. 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate and current annual 8 - hour HAZWOPER refresher, 49 CFR DOT HM-126F certification or willingness to obtain. CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain. Must be willing and able to travel (up to 50%) Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.
